discover that we would be firing a bunch of brand-new M-16s. I'd read about them, but expected M-14s. It was a treat.

I did play a little trick, though. We fired 100 rounds for scoring. Before that, we were supposed to fire a couple of magazines for practice. Since I knew that I'd qualify easily, I didn't fire all of the practice rounds, once I had sighted the weapon in and saw where it was hitting. At the end of the scoring fire, after marking our targets, we were told to fire any remaining rounds.

I did. But I switched the selector to full auto, and emptied the magazine. I got yelled at, but not too loudly. I wasn't the only one who did that, either. It seemed that others, too, wanted that chance, and had saved some of their practice rounds.
