And then finally, I think it’s going to be important for all of us to do some soul-searching. You know, there have been talk about should we convene a conversation on race. I haven’t seen that be particularly productive when politicians try to organize conversations. They end up being stilted and politicized, and folks are locked into the positions they already have.

I think the point is that "conversations" can definitely still go on in the local communities, various social organizations, churches, schools, etc. However at the governmental level, an action plan to address some of the systemic issues (e.g., "Stand your Ground", gun control, etc) is more vital than convening "blue ribbon panels" that essentially acknowledge there is a problem and then the discussion suddenly evolves into nonsensical fears of "throwing money at a problem", etc., after which the issue is shoved aside and forgotten once more.
