(20,450 posts)Because I don't think many white people (especially white liberals) understand the back story behind the animosity directed at President Obama from both men:
Both have had a personal vendetta against the president since the 2008 primaries. For Tavis, the animosity began when Obama couldnt make his event due to a scheduling conflict, but Hillary came. Tavis took that time to bash Obama, questioning his authenticity as a black man. Things havent been the same since, and Tavis has taken every opportunity to bash the president for one reason or another, even appearing on Fox News and other conservative outlets to castigate the president. For Cornel West and a few other black intellectuals, they see Obama as havent experienced the kinds of hardships faced by most black Americans, since his ancestors are not the direct ascendants of slaves.
In addition, Cornel took personal insult when Obama didnt give him a front row seat, personal invitation to the 2008 Inauguration. Since then, both Cornel and Tavis have been the Bash Obama Tag Team and have garnered adoring fans from both the conservative right and the liberal left, angry at Obama for various reasons. And mainstream media loves it when there are black folks who hate the president; they can use that to shield them against any charges of racial bias or unfairness. I see how the Sunday talk shows jumped with glee to have Tavis Smiley on to trash the president. It was sickening.
No one in the mainstream press would give Tavis Smiley or Cornel West the time of day 5 years ago!!
