If you ever have a chance, read anarcho-communist Prince Peter Kropotkin's "Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution" ... he wrote this at the turn of the last century in response to the "social darwinism" of the day, and to build upon Darwin's observations. He studied inter and intra-species cooperation versus competition from finks to humans, and came to the conclusion that cooperation was more of a factor of evolution than competition was, and that those societies that stressed cooperation over competition, tended to breed more offspring that were selected for cooperation; and also that these societies tended to prosper over their competitive counterparts. It's a very interesting read.
Excerpt from Wiki:
Kropotkin pointed out the distinction between the direct struggle among individuals for limited resources (generally called competition) and the more metaphorical struggle between organisms and the environment (tending to be cooperative). He therefore did not deny the competitive form of struggle, but argued that the cooperative counterpart has been underemphasized: "There is an immense amount of warfare and extermination going on amidst various species; there is, at the same time, as much, or perhaps even more, of mutual support, mutual aid, and mutual defense...Sociability is as much a law of nature as mutual struggle."[2] However, Kropotkin did consider cooperation as a feature of the most advanced organisms (e.g., ants among insects, mammals among vertebrates) leading to the development of the highest intelligence and bodily organization.

I don't think this is an element of society that gets enough attention. The United States, as it becomes more engaged in war throughout its history, has tended to discard the more cooperative nature of ourselves, and as such, with each generation, war becomes more and more normal. Whereas, let's say, Sweden, for example; they tend to be a cooperative society because that is what is stressed.
Anyway, I'm glad you said what you said, because it gave me an opportunity to provide the above.
