(39 posts)I'm from Daytona Beach, Florida, a short drive from Sanford. My father's family goes back about as many generations as a Central Florida family can. I've been proud to be a graduate of the University of Florida.
But good god my home state disgusts me anymore! I haven't lived there since 1983. People have always said to me it must be cool to have grown up in a famous beach town with a famous racetrack but now if I admit where I am from I would expect they would say that Florida is where you can get away with murder, oh and isn't Daytona near where the Casey Anthony and the George Zimmerman trials were? Why yes it is.
I've lived in Chicago for the past 23 years. Our President was my Senator. Last year I didn't see a single Romney bumper sticker anywhere in my neighborhood. My voting precinct had five Democrat poll workers and one very bored Republican. People think blood runs in the streets here and that I'm risking my life going anywhere without a gun. Chicago deals with specific neighborhoods plagued by extreme crime rates---and severe poverty. But I've been told, by people who don't live here of course, that Chicago's homicide problem is because the city won't let "honest people" have guns.
My neighborhood in Chicago might as well be another planet from Auburn Gresham or Englewood. I feel more concerned when I visit my parents in Daytona as I do not know how many people around me at any given time are making use of their conceal carry permits. Given the paranoia level you need to think it's necessary to be armed at all times, I never know what could set somebody like that off.
