(37,550 posts)The "new evidence" is ambiguous while some of the old evidence, while it may turn out to be false, isn't ambiguous.
There's always a risk with confirmation bias of being too willing to believe the ambiguous when it supports what you want to believe and discounting to the point of ignoring evidence that conflicts with your belief.
Even if it turns out that the father was recorded on tape at a shooting range 50 miles away and the Elkins' kid's weapon is a positive match to the gun used to kill the baby there will be people who will insist that the black kids must be innocent and it's all a set-up. Even were the kids to boast of the killing on a Youtube video it still wouldn't be enough to convince them.
Similarly, even if it turns out that there's no question that the parents did it--the kid's gun isn't a match, they're on tape doing something miles away and a gas station video camera clearly caught the two parents on tape shooting their own kid, there'll be tried-and-true racists convinced that *that* is a set-up.
