chains for sport. They'll sometimes use situations that are "ripped from the headlines" or based on films because they're short of imagination.

It might be true, but it might be someone having a laugh by using a tragedy to get people to rise to the bait and answer the question.

I think a good grain of salt is recommended before approaching that place.
