Trouble in Paradise: Biotech Firms versus the people of Hawaii [View all]

Hi Folks,

For those who have ever visited Hawaii and island of Kauai, spread the word about what's happening on the Garden Island.

I only recently became aware of this, but Kauai has been ground zero for new experimentation with GMO crops and pesticides (conducted by Monsanto, Dow, BASF, Pioneer (DuPont) and Syngenta, etc.)

County councils are currently unable to get information from the biotech chemical companies about what chemicals are used where and the amounts thereof. Federal and state government agencies have basically given the companies carte blance and are doing nothing to monitor possible harmful effect.s

A public hearing is coming up for Ordinance 2491 for Kauai County. This ordinance would protect the “right to know” what pesticides and GMO’s are being used and their impacts.

I realize it's hard to do much remotely, but if you're interested in issues of sustainability, environmental impact and corporate malfeasance, read up on the issue and let others know. I've gotten word that the biotech companies are spending a bundle to promote their cause and flying in armies of minions to offer their "testimony" and silence opposition.
