unless they are at a dog park, at doggie daycare or in the backyard.

They can escape, and the big one has on occasion, but a few of the neighbors know him and can walk up and get him under control no matter how crazy he is acting (we will bark at folks - fancies himself a guard dog). Any dog can be a menace - doesn't need to be a pitt bull - and that is why leashes really are a good idea unless you are out on a farm somewhere (even then you want fences because dogs can get hit by cars).
