Do you still have the CD for X5? If so, then just load it on the new machine - if X5 works on Win 8. I'm using X4 on Win 7 - had to upgrade because X3 was not compatible with Win 7.
Now that I'm not running a business I only upgrade software when I upgrade my box or when I will lose my upgrade path. I went from Photoshop CS3 to CS6 last year to maintain my upgrade path. Now it seems CS6 wants me to upgrade my computer - NOT something I have in the budget for this year! I only have problems when I am scanning or batch editing hundreds of photos, so I will limp along with it for now. I'm in between antique photo albums now, so I don't need to do as much photo editing right now anyway.
