It does so much more for me than the "pay to use" OSes out there. The only limits placed on you are your ability and willingness to learn.

edit - BSD was prior to Linux and is it's own thing. I have never used it, so can not comment on it. But, many of the user level applications are shared, so probably not too different once it is up and running.
