(31,464 posts)AA has no proven effectiveness. It is literally, statistically no more effective than any other method of quitting. The ONLY thing that matters is that you want to quit. Many people like the camaraderie and community of AA. Many people are put off by the religious aspect (don't let anyone tell you differently, it is God-centered. They aren't talking about your doorknob or whatever when they say "your higher power"
. There Secular Organization for Sobriety (which, as the name implies, puts the power in YOU, and doesn't tell you you're a worthless, powerless slob), and several other excellent programs if you really, really want to stop. You seem to have made a major first move. Find some support, and whether it is AA or SOS or whatever, just stick with it.
