(6,324 posts)Tasers have been shown to be far safer than tackling and restoring to hands on physical violence. For both parties. Wrestling and fighting with a person who may have a knife or other weapon is a much greater risk for the officers, and once you go hands on eyes can get gouged out, people get bit, and there is a much greater risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens.
Fighting isn't like the movies.
I have been tased. Every officer who carries a taser has taken the ride before they are allowed to use it. Deaths are very rare, and almost always either it was a preexisting heart condition that a physical struggle also can cause to go bad, or drug use.
There is no doubt that the taser is safer than a physical confrontation- for the officers and the suspect. People die from fights too, and given that once you are fighting with a suspect they often try to grab for the gun fights can and do lead to shootings.
Life isn't like the movies.
