Perhaps, their base was just the leading edge of a more generalized rejection of truth in favor of vague perceptions - usually consistent with one's pre-existing likes and dislikes - from other parts of the political spectrum. I would like to think that the left is not as prone to rejecting truth, evidence and science, in favor of emotion and perception, but perhaps too many are falling into the same tendency.
