"aside from this lunacy"???? seriously, your nephew is so far beyond the pale that, even if a relative, I would wave a relieved bye-bye.

just because they are relatives doesn't mean we have to associate with them, acknowledge them, or try to pretend that, apart from this one small quirk, they really are okay.

remember the adage "your friends are god's way of apologizing for your relatives."
