belittling people because they are fat- short-skinny- tall- or any other physical reason- is wrong and something that should stop.
People say that people are fat by choice. Hmmm... where have we heard that before? Yes, people who are 'fat' can drastically alter their lives and bodies in an attempt to become what society has deemed acceptable, but who are we to reject and marginalize them until they 'conform' to what 'we' declare to be ok? Again, where have we heard that before?
Look at all the lives that have been negatively impacted by the constant harping on changing ones body. Botox, silicone implants, liposuction, anorexia, bulemia, plastic surgery fiascos...People have the right to do what they want with their bodies, but they shouldn't be forced into doing it because society says they aren't acceptable otherwise.
I don't mean to say that being obese is something that people should aspire to, but to frame it as a 'character-deficency' and further stigmatize those who already struggle with their weight is shameful and cruel. We - progressives/dems- should walk our talk on this issue. It's an ugly prejudice.
I think your post makes a good point. It's interesting to watch others try to defend something that is just plain wrong.
