Report: Freehold Raceway Mall installs license plate readers [View all]
FREEHOLD The eye in the sky at Freehold Raceway Mall now extends well beyond its expansive shopping area.
The Asbury Park Press reports that license plate readers have been installed over the exits and entrances to the malls parking area as a counterterrorism measure.
The Freehold Raceway Mall readers are not the first such installation in New Jersey in 2011, a similar system was in place at the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown, said a report by The Times of Trenton.
County officials told reporters that the mall is viewed as a terrorist target.
The Freehold Raceway Mall is one of the largest shopping malls in New Jersey, Cynthia Scott, spokeswoman for Sheriff Shaun Golden, told the Asbury Park Press. Located next to it is the electronic telecom switching system. Its vital that this type of critical infrastructure is protected by the latest technology in the fight against terrorism.
