(6,670 posts)Your job: to tell which of three lines on a sheet of paper is longest. The differences are not small, the job is trivially simple. Everyone who is not blind can do it perfectly.
Now, everyone in the room but you insists, unanimously, that a different line than you chose is the longest. What happens?
About 25% say "so what? the line is as long as it is."
About a third waffle - they are troubled by the contradiction, and may go either way, but they are not not comfortable with either.
And then there's the group that conformed with the majority in 11 out of 12 instances. Some of them don't even REMEMBER afterwards that they disagreed at first.
This basic picture is supported by a bunch of new research into the difference between "conservative" and "liberal" brain function when thinking about politics, and the studies indicating that more data actually hardens people's resistance to adapting to the facts instead of supporting it. Their membership in that group is more important to them than their sense data.
No, aspies went in the right direction, but sometimes too far and sometimes off the trail completely. Sheeple are MUCH more threatening - you can't make a Nazi nation or a fundamentalist church out of aspies, it just won't work.
