(68,421 posts)a Christmas tree with lists of families who have applied to be included for gifts from those who want to "adopt" a family for Christmas. The individual family members' names are not included, but the number of people who need gifts, and the age and gender of the individuals, are listed so that the adopters can purchase suitable gifts for each one.
It is quite possible that the nice gadget, toy, or piece of jewelry the person has was a gift from someone who "adopted" that family for Christmas.
Why shouldn't individuals or families who are having financial problems get to own nice things? Yes. sometimes they are gifts, but not always. Sometimes a parent has scraped, scrimped, sacrificed, and saved over a long period of time to collect enough money to buy his or her child the nice gift the child has been dreaming of for so long.
Just having something nice that goes beyond absolute necessity can make life so much more pleasant for a person--especially a child--who is experiencing financial insecurity.
Someone needs to smack that little Coulter-wannabe upside the head--good and hard.
