I edited the OP to be clearer. It is not that people should be scared, but that the modern ability to limit the effects of tears non-invasively changes the risk-return profile to the point where the expense/inconvenience of false positives gets smaller relative to the potential benefit.
So though most of us will encounter the symptoms at some point without substantialy occurring, the reward for taking it seriously is high and will only get higher.

Mine said I had maybe a couple of years before needing surgery. I notice the difference steadily.
