In reply to the discussion: The Ignore button.... [View all]RFKHumphreyObama
(15,164 posts)Funny thing is that I don't think I started using ignore until about two years into my DU experience. Then one particularly annoying poster came along (I think she was later banned) and I started. This was followed by the 2004 primary flame wars, the 2008 primary flame wars and so on and, gradually, my DU ignore list became clogged. I would try to clean it and give everyone an amnesty at times but it was just such a chore (and half the posters were banned, anyway, when I went to check on them)
So when this new version of DU came out, I vowed a fresh start. And I believe I have been a lot more liberal in its use than I once was (the "trash thread" option is a great alternative in some cases -also I believe I've been a lot lazier/laid back with the ignore button than I once was). But nevertheless my ignore list is growing again and I find that most of the people on my new ignore list are quite often the same ones who were on my old ignore list
It's not about ignoring divergent points of view or having a closed mind establishing an echo chamber or anything like that. That's never been my philosophy. The people who go on my ignore list are people whom can't seem to get their point of view across without being obnoxious, rude, offensive or insulting either on their subject topic or toward other people who hold different beliefs to them. I also have a very short fuse with people whose beliefs I find racist (racism is a very emotive subject for me). For me, to not put them on ignore would make my DU experience very unpleasant and would discourage me from coming here more than I already have been over the last few years
