This isn't fair to either case - individual cases are just that, individual, and the way I think about Zimmerman isn't even close to the way I think about Manning.
I'm totally dumbfounded by the laws that let Zimmerman go free.
I agree with those who think Manning is a hero, a person who did a heroic thing - and this is because I don't support a global police state. On the other hand his action was Gandhiesque and he followed Gandhi's example all the way, maintaining a non-violent opposition to whatever done to him, always respectful of the people. I think if Manning had escaped to Ecuador Gandhi would be smiling. Gandhi didn't advocate being a slave in a bondage game. pacifist != slave.
Those who sneer at Snowden for being a "coward" (that's what they say!) because he isn't proactive in giving himself in to state hands, to state and military courts, are NOT echoing Gandhi.
