17. 100 times the population density of America might be a bit of a stretch

US land area= 25 times that of Japan
US population= 2.5 times that of Japan
Japan's population density= approx. 10 times that of the US
or, expressed in another way, Japan has 4 times the population density of California.

Japan is a relatively homogeneous society that has long had a large population. Rather than "rugged individualism in limitless spaces", Japan developed a social philosophy of "grin and bear it" and "sink or swim together". That includes putting up with a lot of irritating things that Americans would have trouble dealing with, and greater acceptance of "sharing the wealth" so that income disparity is not as great of a problem in Japan as it is in the US. Japan also has strict gun control.
