My hubs and I lost his sister and most of his family years ago for the very same reason: the bullshit they believed and sent out.

Good riddance to them too. There was always some tension and some contentious issue with them anyway. Many times ignorance and bigotry cannot be corrected with facts.
It was a relief to get them and their criticism out of our lives.

Please, have no guilt about this, ever. You did the right thing.
