The amazing thing about dogs is they know. You are their hero.
Our dogs radiate joy when they sleep on the bed.
Current #1 dog was picked up from a truck stop. Twelve years past but the sound of a diesel engine still sets off her PTSD.
#2 dog was feral, competing for our "worst dog ever" title with the Catahoula we once adopted, or the worst-dog-in-the-world coyote-collie-hybrid my sister once brought home when we were kids. But this dog loves my wife and is tolerant of humans. Hell on gophers, she plucks them out of their holes and eats them whole. Don't even look at her food. (We feed her last to enforce our own hierarchy. We are the boss.)
#3 dog, was kept chained five years in a backyard 24/7. His teeth are worn from chewing on his chain. I don't think he'd ever been inside a house before we brought him home.
He first looked at our stairs like
and it took a few days watching the other dogs before he came upstairs on his own. He loves to cuddle. If he was a cat on the bed he'd be purring. Feral dog loves him, they can roughhouse for hours. He pees on the vacuum cleaner and drinks out of the toilet. I hope he gets past that.
