(17,748 posts)People do it regularly and have been doing it for all of recorded history. The Bible has plenty of examples: Abram became Abraham, Jacob became Israel, Saul became Paul, as you mentioned. It tends to happen as a result of a watershed event in a person's life, such as a conversion or a marriage, but it can happen just because someone wants a change or because they just aren't satisfied with the name they were originally called.
A person has the right to be called whatever he prefers. It's really not my place or your place to question it. If my best friend tells me today that he wants to be called Napoleon from now on, I will do that. You know why? Because I respect him, and that's essentially what this issue is about. Whether it's an individual or a nation or an ethnicity, you should call people what they wish to be called out of respect for them.
