But only the door handle is critical. Everything else you can wash your hands after, but because many people don't - the door handles are filled with bacteria.
And - personal anecdote - we have one woman at work who never washes her hands (and occasionally leaves horrendous messes in the bathroom), and two others who insist on coming to work sick and pretending they are not. When I had two surgeries a couple of years ago and needed to be sure I didn't come down with a respiratory illness that would prevent surgery I started the practice of never touching any door handles (bathroom or otherwise). In the winter it is easy enough - I just pull my sleeve over my hand when I encounter a doorknob. Summer is a bit harder so I add a few extra handwashes. Before I started this practice I had at least two illnesses a year - since then I've had one cold each year, during the summer when clothing forces me to touch doorknobs regularly - and I'm apparently not as consistent about remembering to wash regularly as I am about avoiding doorknobs when I can.
But - that said - I don't leave them in a pile on the floor. I try to put them in the trash can in the bathroom (and more and more bathrooms are following the practice of putting trash cans by the door because of the recommendation that you open the door with a paper towel). If a trash can in the bathroom isn't convenient, I fold the towel dirty side in, take it with me, and toss it in the next receptacle I see.
