Girl poisoning from what I grokked from the book's description sounds horrible. The notion that girls would need to intentionally act less smart than they are just to fit into a what they feel is the version of woman that society accepts is tragic, but I have seen it play out some. She seems to be rebelling against that expected norm with wild hair color that she controls and a want of piercings and tattoos. She seems to have shaken the "play dumb" idea at this point, however. I'm totally happy with the rebellious self expression.
