In Debian I used Synapatic, searched for "Microsoft fonts," and then selected "Installer for Microsoft TrueType core fonts."

Here's some instructions for Ubuntu:

Microsoft released these "core fonts" for free use. Installers for non-Microsoft operating systems are easily found.
