by monkeys literally throwing darts at dart boards even!) and the results showed that random stock picking performed better than about 80-90% of the professional money managers\stock pickers. This study is often cited in defense of modern asset allocation theory, IIRC, which says you can achieve the best results not by making specific stock or bond picks but by simply allocating your assets across a variety of asset classes in accord with your age and risk profile.
But the larger philosophical implications that you note are also ineluctable conclusions one can draw from said study.
