Because easy access to an efficient killing implement makes spur of the moment suicidal thoughts fatal, rather than just bad moments. And all the mental health measures in the world are not going to help you if you blow your head off before your loved ones get you help. If there had not been a gun in the house, the father would more than likely have come home to a sobbing wife, suffering from depression. And he could have gotten her help. The gun prevents loved ones from getting help before it is too late.
