Second, future candidates. We all make mistakes, we all exercise bad judgment from time to time. The trick is this, don't make the same mistake twice. If you screw up one thing, don't do it again. Just about everyone understands that mistakes happen, and just about everyone knows we screw up, we're human, and it goes with the territory.
Let's say (for the sake of argument only as I never have had) I've had an affair. Either my wife finds out, or I tell her. Either way we argue, she's hurt. We go to counseling, and we agree to communicate better and work towards a strong marriage. She's forgiven me for a period of weakness, a time of bad judgment, and believes I will show better judgment in the future. Then as the sessions of our counseling end, I have another affair, and she finds out. What is my excuse then? What is the old saying? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on you.
Many people could and did forgive his behavior once. Nobody will forgive anyone who makes the same mistake again after getting caught.
