You're in a situation where you're literally digging in your couch to get by. You've got two jobs, and things still aren't looking bright. You have to work one job just to afford the other job - gas, clothing, etc. You really don't have time to be thinking about your "best interests," because you're basically being forced to consider your immediate interests. So when you catch a soundbyte like "this position my opponent takes might cost you your job!" that's what you hear - you don't have time to go analyze whether that's true. when you hear "All these people from another country are taking your jobs and driving down your wages," you think, hey, that makes sense, 'cause you KNOW you're busting your ass, but you're still not "making it."

One of the sad ironies of our society is that our politics reinforce and perpetuate poverty in his fashion.
