In reply to the discussion: What is wrong with MSNBC? A Whole Morning of replaying the 9/11 tragedy as it happened? Really? [View all]Grammy23
(6,130 posts)17. I agree with those who think this is too much.
When I saw that MSNBC planned to re-run the events of 9/11 .... in their entirety .... minute by minute...... I jumped up from my chair and shouted NO!!! I will not be exploited by the manipulation they are pulling on us.
I have no quarrel with remembering the dead. I have no issue with taking a moment to pause, reflect and honor them. But to replay the events of that day just seems wrong and is designed to wring every bit of emotion out of us. This is a day about healing and moving on, not for reopening the old wounds. And that is what I think "reliving" that day will do.
What I came away with and wrote to my niece in an email a little while ago is that we should ask ourselves what we learned that day. For me, and I suspect many, many others, we had it hammered home to us that we are not as "safe" as we thought we were. It was made very plain that the carefree days of thinking no one would ever dare to attack us on our own land are gone. In fact, they probably were never there in the first place, but we did have our illusions. Those illusions (delusions??) were ripped from our us that day, never to return.
But the sad fact is that personal 9-11s happen to us every day. Loved ones are taken by horrible accidents or injury and sometimes with absolutely no warning. No chance to say goodbye or even express how you feel. Do we dwell on that? Not if we are mentally healthy. If we want to torment ourselves, we dwell on these facts. What should happen is what I would hope was the BIG TAKE AWAY from 9-11.
Telling those we love and care about how we feel should be a priority. Not just something we mutter on a birthday, anniversary or other special time. Take the time today and every day to make sure your dear ones know how you feel. And show them. Do something unexpected to demonstrate how you feel. That is what I learned on 9-11 and all the time spent reliving that day by watching the TV is time wasted that you could be doing something constructive and demonstrative to show that you really learned something that day.

OP
No flames coming from me. I can remember the horror without being smacked in the face with it again.

Cheap production. They already have all the footage, so all they have to do is roll it again.

I understand. So often people who resist learning from something don't want to see it.

I imagine the same sentiment holds true vis-a-vis the attack on Pearl Harbor some 60 years ago
