efforts.

Just heard a good discussion on RT about the RED LINE where Obama said Assad has to go and how that needs to be walked back in the coming negotiations. The consensus was that Obama coming out so early and drawing that line made it much more difficult for Geneva 2 Talks or diplomatic efforts in the time since his statement. And, led to the difficulties with him having to walk back when Parliament didn't go along with our efforts to strike and our House and Senate balked.

Listening to the discussion with four panelists (2 diplomats (US), Syrian Opposition member) I felt that it was probably the Hawks (PNAC) supporters plus the zealots for "humanitarian interventions around the world" at all costs like Rice and Powers who were also pushing him. So he caved to that pressure and that helped get him in this mess.
They all agreed that is a chance for him to drop that so that the negotiations can go forward and letting Russia be more involved is a win in taking pressure off of us to strike. They felt that this is a set back for Saudi Arabia and positive in that respect for stability if Assad can hold his own for awhile. They did feel that it would end up with partition eventually because of the ethnic splits with Assad holding on to a corridor and the other areas governing themselves...as best case scenario.
