(1,954 posts)Judging from what we see on TV, everyone in the US lives in nice, large houses, with nice cars, in nice neighborhoods, CIA is a humanitarian agency always worried about saving the world from supervillains, the police is beacon of ethics and moral ground, politicians are honest, there's no corruption, there's no poverty, no crime, no homeless people...
On the other hand, the US media frequently makes use of reports on undeveloped countries to reinforce stereotypes that have the objective of spreading the perception that "you should be grateful for what you have and shut up about what TPTB are making in this country, see how the rest of the world is living way worse than you are".
Right after I arrived in the US where I studied for some months, a gentleman in Chicago took me to show a computer. He didn't want to offend me, he simply assumed I had never seen one before...
