The point is that I would NOT have used them as examples IF they had NOT committed acts of gun violence.

The writer of that sign would not have associated the three with irresponsible gun ownership were they not known from their actions. Also, the writer did use a clear and concise description of whom they believe a irresponsible gun owner would be... Even if they did not use an example of someone actually who committed acts of gun violence, their descriptive appearance of someone whom they believe to be irresponsible (solely without regard to the three) is enough for them.

So, is the WRITER in the wrong or not?

I pointed out people who have, in fact, committed act of violence, regardless of their look... So there's no argument that Lanza, Loughner and Holmes look like responsible gun owners when you and I KNOW they they really aren't.
