In reply to the discussion: Four Key Democrats Are Now Opposed To Larry Summers, And That Could Be Devastating For His Candidacy [View all]DFW
(54,897 posts)This does not mean Summers is in or out, but everyone was so positive that the missiles were going to rain down on Syria any second, and Obama wriggled out of it, realizing, correctly, that he might well have been heading into a decision he would regret soon after making it.
I think the Summers nomination could well be headed int the same direction. If Obama had been 100% decided on Summers, I think the name would have been placed in nomination long before now. It may still happen, but one thing is for sure, and that he is aware of the clamor for Summers' name to to be removed from the "A" list, and quickly. No matter how much he might have preferred Summers, he is not eager for a drawn-out fight over it, and most certainly not with prominent and popular Democrats. I think Obama is (wisely) looking for a way to have Summers' name disappear from his top choices, and is taking the time to let a little grass grow over its former inevitability. Picking a fight with nut case Republicans who can't be taken seriously is one thing. A Democratic president picking a fight with Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown is another matter entirely. That's not one he wants to join.
