More and more you have no idea what is actually going into your food, if it's been genetically modified and/or what is being done to your food by way of processing, handling and transportation. The answer is to BUY LOCAL. Yes, you're going to pay $20.00 for a chicken and yes, I understand not everyone is able to do this. But having said that, I can easily get 10 meals out of one chicken . . . probably more. We forget that having access to cheap food has made us wasteful (40% as per a recent report). The problem is that we are paying a high price and sacrificing food nutrition and safety for that Always Low Price.
