although not the modern design of today, but running water to flush wastes away were indeed well established in Rome. Don't forget the aqueducts either. My grandfather (who immigrated from Rome in the 1920's) used to love to tell his Anglo Saxon brother- in-law "My people had paved roads and running water while your people were fighting over the deer hide".
