The republican party has done an effective job of recruiting those who are most driven by the emotions of fear and hatred.
I can understand the financial motivations of republican officials and their spokespersons. They serve the people who pay them.

As to the every day republican, the ones that cheer at the denial of food for the hungry or aid to the sick, their motivation must go beyond lack of information.
Their fears of inadequacy and self loathing are easily turned outward by those whom they believe serve or inform them.
