I changed the headline to "delete" rather than self-deleting post 'cause it will sink fast enough this way, but I wanted to explain the situation to anyone misled by the original post (now in in gray box).

I was misled by CNN (and CNN.com) on the topic. Upon further research, it appears that the NICS/NCIC system is unaffected by the shutdown. (At least in the short term) Federal background checks will proceed as usual.

Actually... I'm surprised they haven't done something about this. Or have they?

Is there a provision that if the Feds haven't responded by hours X you get to buy the gun?
