(20,176 posts)They had a chance to lay this one on the Democrats...but they failed to do the things they needed to do...like gag Ted Cruz and figure out how to hamstring the House Tea-Party Coalition enough so they could get close to the middle and claim that they were the only ones making concessions. That was their path to winning this showdown or the coming one on the debt ceiling. Literally the only way out of this for the core-GOP now is for Boehner to throw himself to the wolves in terms of losing the Speakership (if the GOP even holds the House) and use procedural-tools at his disposal to crush out his own party's flank--marginalize the Tea Party in order to pass a sign-able deal.
There's a shutdown and no matter how it resolves, at the polls they're going to carry the blame of it and do the unthinkable...lose seats in a President's second-term mid-term election...the opposition party to the President never loses seats in the second midterm. It's just a matter of how many and how much they can do between today and eDay2014 to staunch the bleeding.
