(10,478 posts)the same and hope I am wrong. How many times have we heard predictions of the end of the Republican party as a force, only to have them survive the latest fiasco and live to create the next fiasco. Their demise hasn't happened so far, and there's no particular reason to think that this time is the charm. If they survived the recession of 07-08, something directly attributable to many of their pet policies, they're going to take a lot more than a government shut-down to dislodge. It's obviously going to take something worse than the recession, god forbid.
If I were a fan of political brinksmanship or had a president who was particularly good at brinksmanship, I would say, Yeah, delay Obamacare for a year. Tell ALLLL those people without insurance with their fingers poised over their keyboards to finally sign up for even a little bit of insurance, Oops, sorry, Repubs are shutting down government if you are allowed to have health insurance. THAT might get some attention and change the mindset. "Might" being the operative word. And no, I am not suggesting this, as it's too risky. But I've thought for a very long time that's it's going to take something at least this drastic to force some serious change.
