1. There was an article about this at Salon I think - talking about Nixon and Reagan

After Nixon resigned the party had a number of members who were high up and respected but not as tainted as Nixon. After George W. Bush's crater at the end of his presidency, there isn't any really anybody on deck who can take the reigns and so were left with what we have.

Not to say that Reagan was good or anything like that but he was Effective at pushing the country right ward and he was enough of a politician to compromise when he absolutely had to.

But for the record Reagan was a bad President.
