(180,636 posts)I remember the 2002 campaign very well. Kirk Watson is a classmate and was running for attorney general. In 2002, Rove and company was still using Sept. 11 to generate votes for the GOP. Remember, Saxby Chambliss was able to defeat a true war hero by claiming that the Democrat was not strong on defense. Rove was pushing a number of attacks using Sept. 11 to justify people not changing course.
In Texas, Sanchez was accused or linked to money laundering and/or drugs due to the fact that he owned a bank. The GOP was very good at stoking both racial resentment/fears and using the fact that Sanchez was from a border county to imply that he was involved in drugs. There were no merit to these rumors but that did not matter. Perry ran a very dirty campaign and was able to get by with it.
I do not think that the same tactics will work this time. Abbott has a habit of stepping into messes and some of his or his supporters statements such as "retard barbie", "abortion barbie" and the claim that as a woman Senator Davis is too stupid to be governor can be used to motivate the woman vote. Women are a majority of the voters in Texas and I think that Senator Davis will be able to build on Abbott's stupidity to build up a gender gap.
