If we didn't have insurance through work, my husband and I would pay about $8800 for health insurance on the exchanges. Our rates are high because we're high income and in our early 60s. That $8800 is a lot, but is still a LOT LESS than we'd have paid for insurance on the open market before ACA. The ACA may make it possible for us to retire before we reach Medicare age and that is a gift to us.

Anyone making $80,000 yr has employer healthcare or can easily afford to pay the penalty.
