In reply to the discussion: Is there any way for DU to determine multiple names from the same IP address of members? [View all]Coyotl
(15,262 posts)35. Web servers produce log files that admins can store.
The output of an error log looks like this:
Sun Sep 01 17:40:33 2013 error client 66.249.73.122 File does not exist: /data/16/1/13/162/1339814/user/..../htdocs/net/get
This kind of info allows admins to detect problems, such as who is trying to hack you and who is running a DOS attack, etc. It also is how site stats are produced.

No, the IP address you would come into DU would be that assigned to the router by you're ISP........

Welcome to DU. Great screen name, even if many of our younger members don't get it.

It's your home router that gets the public IP address, not each computer in the house

It's utterly trivial for most forum administrators, and often addressed automatically. (nt)
