(6,151 posts)Although thank God I didn't grow up here. But in this tiny RedNeckLand town there's one very sweet old lady who volunteers at our small library. I went in yesterday and she started to tell me with tears in her eyes about the Doctors W/O Borders going into Africa and restoring people's eyesight for a mere $11 in expense, borne by the charity of course. I said yes, the news story brought in many thousands of dollars in contributions and I was glad to hear of it.
But the woman behind the desk started to gripe! They'll never see a penny of that $! Doesn't do any good anyway! yada yada.
My friend reminded her that these were mostly poor little kids, for heaven's sake. Nasty didn't even slow down. I told her, look - the $ goes to the charity to meet their expenses and they alleviate human suffering all over the world. I can't think of a holier call. And people who really didn't have $11 to spare were contributing. (Poor people per capita give more to charity than most rich people.)
Nasty knew I wasn't about to turn loose of her until she shut up, so finally she did. That's one of the best things about retirement; awfully hard to get fired. I didn't call her the selfish bleep she is in so many words, but my meaning was quite clear even to her. (That helps explain why I'm so popular around here!)
