My question: Which comes first? Do the hate-mongers merely *express* the hatefulness that lurks in the dark reaches of the souls of their followers? Or, do they *incite* hatefulness by repeating vile and false ideas again and again? Probably both.
I decided years ago -- around 2005 -- that Bush supporters and/or Dittoheads and the like were either : 1) stupid (as in low IQ); 2) willfully ignorant; or 3) just plain evil. Consequently, I retreated from associating with my sister-in-law as well as my other sister-in-law who said that the way to handle Iraq was to just "nuke 'em and be done with it." I couldn't believe it! Was she *that* ignorant? Or could it be that she was that callous, heartless, and lacking of basic human empathy? In either case, I disassociated myself from both of them.
What has surprised me in the subsequent years, however, is that even my friends have been infected with this kind of hatefulness, too. My friends who were against the war in Iraq (the illegal invasion perpetrated by the criminal Bush cabal), are now talkin' trash about Obama -- as well as everything he says and does (down to what he eats, for gawd's sake). And about their sudden need for guns. One of my friends, the life-long Democrat who is also an environmentalist, said, "I'm gonna' register as a hunter and buy a hunting rifle. That way, when Obama comes to take the guns, he won't take mine because even in Britain, they allow hunters to have their rifles."
I mean, come on.
Another friend, who claims to be spiritually enlightened, is the one I mentioned who has guns all over her house -- literally, behind every door and in her own bed!
Sooooo .... Since I truly believe that this kind of thinking will lead to fascism and the destruction of the Republic, and since any effort I make to dissuade them from their ugly, demented, callous, and self-serving ideas is met with anger, I have to retreat from even my old friends.
I feel like I'm the only one who believes that slavery should be abolished in the company of slave owners. I feel like a Protestant in Catholic Spain in the 1600s. I feel like a hippie on Wall Street. And I wonder and worry where this Great Divide will end.
